The small Soan tea room in Kyoto has a narrow entrance called nijiriguchi, where guests must crouch down to enter. Once inside, the host serves tea in this small space. All utensils and cups are carefully selected for their aesthetics, and harmonizing them with the hanging scroll in the alcove is essential. The scroll’s message expresses the theme of each ceremony.
