Girl’s festival decorations
March 3rd is Hinamatsuri or Girl’s Day, when people celebrate girls’ health and happiness around Japan.
Girl’s Day is also called the Peach Festival because peach blossoms are used to decorate and expel any evil spirits surrounding the girls.
The origin of this practice may come from a custom in the Heian period when evil spirits were transferred to children’s dolls. The dolls were then placed into rivers and allowed to flow downstream, taking the evil spirits with them.
